From 1984 until 2020, Porter Square boasted a gift shop unlike any other in the world. Joie de Vivre offered an endless array of whimsical, surprising, and one-of-a- kind objects. Yes, classic playthings like Magic 8 Balls, Slinkys, music boxes, and kaleidoscopes (at up to $500). But also rainbow makers, yodeling pickles, singing fish, puppets, wind-up toys, and just plain strange or silly books and cards. Founder and owner Linda Given will share stories of her singular shop, and describe the adventures and challenges of owning a small, independent retail store. She’ll bring visual images, a few items (including at least one singing hamster), and copies of her book, The Book of Joie Or a Thousand Singing Hamsters.
